FAD: Pat, is fashion really important?
FAD: Nothing is important?
Pat: In the grand scheme of things -nothing is important. But, I do not
know at what level of importance you mean.
FAD: O.K. It is more important than say ...banking. What else is fashion
more important than?
Pat: It is more important than politics!
FAD: Are you saying that you are not political?
Pat: No, I am political, but not in a political sense.
FAD: I do not understand. Let me get this straight - you are not a
republican?
Pat: No, no!
FAD: Well, then who is Patricia Field?
Pat: Actually, just recently, I was wondering that myself.
FAD: What did you come up with?
Pat: Patricia Field has sort of ...what is that term when a one cell unit
splits? Asexual reproduction.
FAD: An asexual reproductive personality? That is a new one.
Pat: I mean, in a sense, Patricia Field has become two physical beings. I
have taken on two different lives. One Patricia Field is an individual. A
human being. The other Patricia Field is a fashion house, or a philosophy, a
style, a business -whatever.
FAD Are you legendary?
Pat: Well, I believe, the house is legendary.
FAD: The house has been around 20-25 years?
Pat: That is true. Although on the other hand, I was born in 1942.
Therefore, I have been around 52 years.
FAD. I understand. If you were not a fashion designer, what would you
be?
Pat: I do not consider myself a designer.
FAD: Alright, if you were not in the "art of fashion," what other career
would you pursue?
Pat: I am not going to answer that question. I will tell you why. Those
people are like you, me, or anyone else. When they go shopping they go as
people, not as some media phenomenon super celebrity thing. They are
people. I cannot use them to substantiate what we do here. It is not fair
to them either.
FAD: I can respect that. Last year, I read a Vogue Magazine article where
you discuss "technology" as playing a large role in the future of fashion.
How so?
Pat: Technology is going to play a large role in the future of everything -
fashion included. Technology will influence all art forms, industrial forms,
communication forms. Right now our technology is moving so fast! More
quickly than our ability to harness and apply it to everyday living.
Technology is so advanced, but we do not know what to do with it yet.
Eventually, we will not have to sew. Sewing machines will become
obsolete! Using synthetic fabrics, we will be able to bond, spray, and mold
clothing together. Like Converse All Star Sneakers: the canvas top is
bonded to the rubber sole. This is the answer! The answer is in
technology because that is what is new.
FAD Finally, we can both agree, the House of Field is legendary. How have
you maintained such successful longevity here?
Pat: The House has taken on a life of it's own. It is not just tied to me, but
to everyone involved here. We all share a common belief: enjoy life, follow
your good heart, and express yourself!
